Hi All,

As I mentioned in the Avro Arrow Redux WIP thread, upon completing Avro Arrow Redux, I was going to learn Adobe Illustrator by redrawing the playfield for High Speed. I don't know how long this is going to take me but perhaps maintaining this WIP thread will keep me focused on learning Illustrator rather than wandering off to play some pinball wink.gif

Here's a rather bleak looking screenshot.

As some of you may notice, I'm working from the playfield image submitted by wtiger, but I didn't like how the reds at the bottom were rather washed out so I will be choosing my colours from the VP8 table made by PacDude.

I hope I'll get some time while I'm up north at the cottage this weekend to make some progress that I can provide a better screenshot on Tuesday perhaps.

Best Regards,
Todd.

Hi Akiles, I'm sorry but I didn't say I was making a tutorial, just a WIP thread. Or are you saying you want to make a tutorial? I'm sorry but I don't understand completely.

Hi Akiles, I see what you mean, but I'm a complete amateur. wink.gif The only experience I have with Adobe Illustrator is from a link to an online tutorial given to me by Noah.

In my most humble response, I am pleased you think me worthy of doing a tutorial, but I am really not skilled enough yet. In fact, I will be using only the skills I learned in the link provided by Noah: How to trace with Illustrator

I would think there is someone more skilled than I am who would be much better suited to making a PF redraw tutorial. In fact, I believe I have probably taken on a huge task that is better suited to a professional. wink.gif I can only hope to finish it!

Todd.

Hi All,

A tiny bit of progress has been made, I've used the tool "Object -> Path -> Divide Objects Below" in Illustrator to "drill" all of the holes and cutouts in the Black layer of the playfield. After drawing the basic shape of the black layer, I made a new empty layer above it, and then drawing circles and ovals for the various cut outs, one at a time, I would click on "Object -> Path -> Divide Objects Below" and this would create the exact same path on the Black layer. then I was able to separately select that circle or oval on the black layer to delete it, making a hole in the black layer. This is a screen shot of all the holes that I think are necessary on the High Speed playfield to position the lights, lane switches, & bumpers.

Now its time to add some colored layers, building them on top of each other, much like adding layers on a pyramid, working from the outside to the inside.

I hope I made sense. :P

Best Regards,
Todd.

Good luck with this! I have a complete Pinbot redraw that is about 3/4 finished, and will get finished within a few months (I hope). It is a very rewarding process, especially when you have a great idea on how to do a tricky part of the playfield. But at other times, it can be very frustrating and seem like it will never come to an end. Just keep picking away at it and eventually you will be done. I wish you well.

Well I started to draw the white shapes on a new layer above the black and I can't figure out how to re-use the paths on the black layer (for the holes) to duplicate the same holes on the white layers. What am I doing wrong?? huh.gif (and thanks for the encouragement posts!!!)

good luck on the pf redraw it is a huge task !!!!
i have done 5 now, each taking about a month each.
for use in vp i don't see a need to use illustrator as the max res that it takes is 2048 x 2048. i use photoshop with the pen tool i find it goes much quicker.
just a hint find the manual for the game and copy a blueprint out of it then place it in photoshop and make the size 2048 x 4090 px at 300dpi then take the pf you got off wtiger and adjust the perspective so it lines up with the blueprint out of the manual. then you have a perfect resource for your redraw and can have the lights on different layers. if there are lights the same just duplicate them to save heaps of time.

i am crap at explaining things its all in my head so i hope this helps.
i enjoy redrawing pf's more than i enjoy building in vp so i have resources for many tables building up in my collection that all will see one day smile.gif

Pathfinder! That's the tool I'm going to need to experiment with to re-use paths between layers. Here's a tutorial I found:

Hi,

Work is progressing slowly in my spare time, so far I've added the major white areas and cut holes in there as well. After that was done, I started to add the lowest green level, leaving space for the "trees" to be drawn above. Here is a screen shot:

Thanks!! biggrin.gif While I am enjoying the learning process, I'm a little bit concerned about figuring out how to draw all of the tree tops and the different cars that are on the playfield. I wish I could whip out a fat "sharpie" and just draw them in illustrator. wink.gif

Todd.

So I could use a drawing tablet to "paint" some areas like a paintbrush in Illustrator? Unfortunately I don't have a lot of spare cash for one. I found a Wacom tablet for about $100.00 but I was concerned it would be a waste if it didn't work like I hoped it would. It seems that the next price point up in Wacom tablets is over $300.00 and it happened to be the one that was recommended to me. If I could "paint" those trees with the $100.00 tablet, I'd spend the money on one.

Best Regards,
Todd.

p.s. Thanks for the kind words TAB!
