File Name: JP's Metallica Pro (Stern 2013)

File Submitter: jpsalas

File Submitted: 17 Sep 2024

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): jpsalas
Manufacturer: Stern
Year: 2013
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

Table based on Metallica Pro by Stern, from 2013.

Thanks to:
freneticamnesic: for the Spikey and Snake meshes.
EbiIsLit for the playfield.

This is another "JP's" table, meaning it plays like the original, but there are some differences. In this table there are no layout differences, only ornamental. I have added some decorations here and there,
The playfield is based on the EbiIsLit LE playfield, I simply edited to be the Pro version of the table.

There wasn't any Pro version for VPX, so I thought, why not make one? I still think the Pro version of this table has a better flow than the LE version.

Notes:
- Yes, the snake is hard to hit, and the ball many times will just bounce inside the head and it will not lock, as the original does.
- The spinners don't exist in the Pro version, but I had to add them, but they are situated at the start of the ramps. They do not score in the game, they are just there for fun.
- The lights are not leds, they are good old lamps :) So, there is no fancy Gi color lightning. But the LE version by VPW has incredible lightning :)

This table is for VPX8 only and it has been built and tested with RC4.
The ROM used is the PRO version, the latest for this table, download it from the Stern site and zip it to mtl_180. Don't use the LE or Premium ROM as  they will not work.

Everything should work just like the original Pro version, if you find any bugs don't hesitate to write them in the Support thread :)

JP

Amazon Hunt is not my table, only the script was based on my Fast Draw VP9 table, in which I used the amazon hunt rom.

I have already updated Panthera, but I'm waiting for VPX8 to be final before I upload it, together with the rest of my 236 VPX tables :)

Many thanks for the publication.
Once again an incredibly loving realization.

The pictures of the side walls are very nice

but with this table I would prefer a black side wall with Gl reflections (SideWallGI) :)

Well, you can't have everything. But the file size of the table of only 29.22MB with maximum fun is simply unbeatable. :otvclap:

Anyone else having a problem with the electric chair inserts not getting lit at the shots like they're supposed to?  (yes, I'm using the mtl_180 rom)

I have just tested the table using the Premium ROM (mtl_180h) and then those lights indeed don't work. So, this means you are not using the PRO ROM but The LE/Premium ROM.

RetroM4n asked me this question in the reviews, so I thought to answer it here too, so other may read it too :)

This may be a silly question, my upfront apologies! I have always assumed that when a title from JPSallas starts with "JP's", it is not a 100% recreation but more considered to be a tribute to that title. Now I checked the screenshot of this Metallica and it seems quite like the original table. But -by far- not every table of the great JP starts with "JP's". So, what does it mean when the name of a table starts with "JP's"?

The table is 99% like the original, the layout is the same and it is as accurate as I can make it. But there are some extra decorations, like the two guitars on top of the ramps, the cemetery arch, the coffin on top of the captive ball, the crosses on the top lanes, the Metallica logo at the top side of the right ramp, the spinners at the start of the ramps, and the red diodes on top of those spinners, which replace the small logo on the ramps. There are also some changes to the lights too, like the colored 4 big lights at the bottom of the playfield, the skulls on the coffin red light. Also the two spot flashers on top of the slingshots they point the light to the snake. The snake also has a red tongue. I may have forgot something, but I think those are all the changes :) I think there were enough changes to call it "JP's..." as the table wasn't 100% like the original :)

I really hoped that by preemptively stating I was using the proper ROM, it would avoid being told I'm not.  Let me state again.  I'm using the proper ROM.  I also tested it with mtl_180h, and yes, with that one NONE of the shot inserts work.  The pick target inserts don't light either.  That's why I specifically said the electric chair inserts aren't working.  All the other lights are working just fine.  Because I'm using the proper ROM.  My guess is that the sparky shot has a different triggering mechanism than a basic drop target (grave markers) or ball lock (snake), so there's a lack of communication as to whether or not that shot has gotten hit.

When you hit the target you will see the head shaking, that means the ROM knows you have hit the target. As I can see in the default settings, you get one light on at the start of the game, and it needs 3 or 4 hits to turn on the second light, and 3 or 4 more hits to turn on the 3rd light. After that you need even 3 or 4 more hits to start the multiball. I guess there are adjustments to change the number of hits required, but I have not checked the rom. I know there are some difficulty settings in the Util menu, but as I said, I have not tested them.

But if those lights do not work for you at all, then I haven't clue. Unless you are using an Intel or Ati card and you need to set some extra settings in the VPX video options.

Sorry, I'm not talking about the lights in front of sparky.  Those work fine.  I'm talking about how when you hit sparky it's supposed to light the big white rectangular insert in front of whichever is the currently active shot (the one marked by the arrow insert above the electric chair insert at each shot).  Those are never getting lit.

I guess the problem is that I used "normal" lights and those lights blink too fast and they do not lighten up very much.

I'll change the lights to LED lights, this way you will be able to see them blink. I'll upload the table in a few minutes. And if this do not fix the problem, then I'll need to see clearly which lights are supposed to turn on.

UPDATE

1.0.1 Updated 19,09,1024
- Changed the playfield lights to LEDS so you are able to see them blink, because they blink very fast.

This is mostly a cosmetic change, so you can see clearly which lights are blinking fast.

I just tried the update, and it's still not working for me.  I can see those inserts flashing during the end-of-ball sequence when it's tallying the bonuses, but they're still not lighting for making shots during gameplay.  And I don't think it's cosmetic.  If I hit sparky and assume the insert at the active shot is lit even though I can't see it, the coffin hurry-up isn't starting when making a shot with all 3 "lit".  Also, the cross and snake inserts never start strobing the way they're supposed to when a shot is eligible to start the hurry-up.  They just stay lit solid.

FYI sparky and snake meshes were mine, if dark made them they'd be muuuuuch better. Of course you're free to use them, just don't want to tarnish dark's legacy lol

Thanks for telling me :) I thought they were made by dark. I'll change that in the table info and the release thread.

edit: done! :)
