I've searched and found some information but nothing complete on how to use pinsound w/VPX.

I've downloaded the latest pro version and installed it.

I have some pinsound folders (named the same name as the table ROM).

On the Pinsound website it simply says d/l the software and have an updated VPinMame (which I do).

I've set the sound to 2 after pressing F1 and nothing changes.

I'm missing some steps but I can't find anything on-line etc that shows how to set it up and use it.

Any guidance is sincerely appreciated.

Unfortunately the current PinSound Studio Pro no longer works with VPinMame. The last version of the software still compatible with virtual pinball was PinSound Studio v18.8.3. It still works fine if you can get your hands on it.

Link for 18.8.3 in this post https://www.vpforums...=47635&p=486333

Import pinsound packages from the zip file downloads, assign rom name(s) for the package in pinsound studio, set the rom to altsound mode 2 in pinmame and you should be good to go.

I know it's simple for you - but as someone who's never done it I'm still not clear. I d/l the version in the link you sent me (thank you). When I run it I see 3 steps. I'm not clear on what I need to do at each step.

So d/l the zip package (don't unzip it) and I have several from prior downloads.

Then? - what?

I tried using Step 2 by going to the folder w/the d/l zip file and it says "finished OGG conversion"...and it made a folder.

It made the same folder as if I just unzipped the folder.

So now what? I put it in the altsound folder and changed the folder name to the table ROM name but still....nothing.

EDIT: I see there are multiple tabs. I changed to the Pinball tab and I associated the folder to the ROM name...and I 'believe' it's working...had to tell since it was last night I listened last.

I hope I'm doing it correctly.

Sounds like you're on the right track,

Step 1 - in pinsound studio select the Sound Package tab, then use button 2 to Select and install the sound package zip.   I think you've done this successfully. The imported sound files will be in the PinsoundStudio\Audio folder - leave them there, do not move them to the vvpiname\altsound folder - that folder is for the alternative altsound files (alt sound mode = 1 files), not pinsound files.

Step 2 - In pinsound studio select the Visual Pinball tab. This is where you assign rom name(s) to use with your installed sound packages. Add the rom names for any installed packages and click Save.

Step 3 - in vpiname\setup use the Test option to find the rom, then select game options and set alt sound mode to 2

Remember that pinsound studio needs to be running to work, and started before you start a table.

Hope that makes sense!

Ok. For number 3 an example. Batman Forever is batmanf  there is no batmanf when I run setup.exe.  So that's confusing. And wouldn't I achieve the same result opening the table, pressing F1 and changing the sound option there? Thank you for your help!

ps - how do I know pinsound is 'running'? Do i just leave it open and minimized?

Strange. I can see batmanf as the last rom listed for Batman Forever (4.0). But you're right, there's more than one way to change the altsound setting, use whichever way suits you.

Not got the cab on at the moment but i'm pretty sure if you leave pinsound running you should see some kind of notification it's identified a rom as running in the log window at the bottom after opening a table using a rom you have assigned a package to. If you see that then pinsound is working.

You can either have pinsound open and minimized all the time or launch before visual pinball tables and close it on table exit via your front end.

Hello,

For those in VPX 10.8 beta, does it still work? Here, Pinsound Studio does not get connected to VPX.  altsound of the table is set to 2 , Studio 18.8.3 launched as admin, sound pack associated to the rom, but nothing, no VPX <-> Studio connection. It seems the only option now is altsound.

Thanks.

The connection is between vpinmame and pinsound so i don't think the the VPX version should matter, the vpinmame version probably could.

Just tried a test with VPX 10.8 (non GL version) and pinsound works ok with 32 & 64bit versions. I'm using pinmame 3.6 from Mar 13 2023.

Does launched as ADMIN have anything to do with it, since vpx/vpm would NOT be launched as admin ?
(Why the hell is Pinsound having to run as admin?)

Think that's just old recommendations from a time gone by when there was other stuff running as admin.  Just tried it with and without admin and works for me (but i don't have vpx or vpm running as admin).

Taking advantage of the fact that the topic has been revived. I followed every step outlined above, I am using version 18.8.3, but I still encounter the following error in PinSound Studio: Unsupported pinball sound system. Could anyone help?

I think 'unsupported sound system' or similar normally relates to a rom that is not supported by pinsound having altsound set to 2. What pinsound package and rom, and vpinmame version are you using?

Make sure you use community packages from here https://www.pinsound...les/categories/ as they are still in a format that pinsound 18.8.3 can read (zip) the 'original' mixes on the pinsound site are all (or at least mostly) converted to a pspack extension now.

It worked! I was trying to use it on a ROM that wasn't on the PinSound list. I'm not sure if that was the actual issue, but I tested it on another ROM that was on the list, and it worked.

Thank you very much!!

I have the same problem with PinSound not recognizing any of my files since the update to 10.8GL. I tried 10.7 and it works fine. Any ideas?

Any chance your 10.7 VPX version is 32 bit and you've updated to 10.8 64bit? - you might need to update pinmame x64.

Does pinsound work if you test the rom from vpinmame setup Test option (or at least recognise the rom as having started) in x32 & x64 versions?

I just downloaded the latest pinmame x64 and still same issue. I tried running from the test option in Vpinmame and it does not recognize the rom when PinSound is running, but once PinSound is turned off the rom is then recognized.

The latest being v3.5 full release or the v3.6 beta? (you need a 3.6 beta from sometime in the last year or so to work with Pinsound in x64)

I just tried with the latest x64 3.6 beta and it appears to work, but weirdly pinsound studio needs to be run as admin now (i'm on a different pc & windows version since last testing that). So if you already have pinmame x64 3.6 beta installed then try running pinsound as admin as well.
