Introducing...

FlashVP is an addon that I developed for Visual Pinball to allow developers to add Flash animations and PNG files to VP.

Note: These demos are actually alot faster, just slower in the video due to the video catpure and thanks to billpa for taking some time to work on some of the graphics you see here and for make the videos.

Also these are FS demo's but FVP is also compatible with 4x3 tables and all versions of VP.

Message demo:

Plastic and toy demo:
Highlighted ramps and theres some clear plastic around the saw.

How does it work?
FlashVP is a server and FlashVP is a transparent layer for VP. You wont even know its there and the tables feel the same as before except with new enhancements. FlashVP allows developers to connect to the server from the tables VB Script and in turn FlashVP controls a swf file that provides the media. Through simple VBS calls you can control many individual clips to do what ever you like. We provide the source FLA that dev's can edit and add content to for their tables. FVP should be compatible with all types of tables including 4x3 and Fullscreen tables.
Another great thing about this is that instead of working within VP for your visual elements, you can basically create the table, then take a screenshot of your table and directly work with that screenshot in photoshop and draw in all the graphics you want and when played back in VP all your artwork will be exactly where you drew it. You can also test all your animations this way also. The finalized graphics will be compatible in all resolutions for different user settings.

How fast is it?
At first when I had the idea a while back I though this is going to create some choppy table play, but to my surprise it had no effect from what I could tell. The feedback from testers so far is they have not noticed any issues either. Now I cant make promises for older pc's. But its worth a try to see how it plays for you.

What can you do with it?
Well thats a good question, because really its up to the dev's imagination. We have been trying to come up with cool uses for VP and have been trying our ideas out with lots of success.
My primary use for FVP is that I wanted really nice flasher and GI effects that flash portions of the table and I also wanted better looking plastic ramps. Because of the use of png transparency the lighting looks alot more realistic, combined with animation, you can make really great effects. FlashVP is not only extendable by me but my anyone that wants to take a crack at it. Its made in such a way that the dev's can make up their own input parameters to send to swf's rather than just using the basics that I provide.

Other ideas we have had might be explosions, fire, electricity, holograms which can be good for custom tables. And for recreations you might do things like use vector based instruction cards, and press a button to have it grow big on the screen so you can read it up close. You can add shiny edges and gloss to all your plastics. You can do better animated toys with crisp edges like in the video, or display animated messages to users. We have lots of ideas and will be putting out more demo videos as we make them.

What is the status?
Well FlashVP itself is complete. What Im working on now is the table developer kit that can be downloaded which includes demo tables, source files, documentation and instructions. Also Im trying my fastest to wrap up the two first FVP enabled tables that I would like to release at the same time. We will also be providing a support forum at the HyperPin forums also.

Whats needed?
In order to play a FVP enabled table: The user must initially install a few COM Objects and place the FVP server into their tables folder along with the table and swf for that table. After that just simply play the table.

Before anyone asks, yes we will be extending FVP to allow animated backglasses for FS tables for controlled lighting and score displays. This will be on the second release.

Thanks.

Very nice. The ball is always hidden behind the flash artwork though, isn't it?

Great addition, and just what I have been hoping someone would do. Primarily for backscreens, as you pre-empted my question smile.gif
Where can we download this FVP and demo tables?
How long before version 2?
This will certainly breathe new life into table develpoment.

Oh, and thanks.

True, I initially wrote this for lighting effects which works awesome, then we though you could use this for lots of other things to. So I started adding highlights and plasticy looks to ramps, now the center area of the ramps you would probably use the regular transparent texture but combined with this it makes it looks a ton better. My next test since this runs so great on my computer is that I will try some ball tracking. Then you could add your ball texture to FVP and actually have the ball go on top of anything in FVP, and even between layers so it can be on top of some stuff and below others. With that said theoretically you could do all your graphics in Flash if you like but really thats not what this was intented to do, mainly lighting effects like I said before. My next days off I will run some tests with the ball to see what kinds of things I can do.

I hope to be able to release something within the next couple weeks. Only because I want to finish the first FVP table which is close to being done. This will work great for backglasses for sure. I will keep you updated on the progress of backglass updates as I progress. Its definitely on the top of my priority list.

How exciting!
I'd love to see the space invaders backglass in action. I was thinking today that it was possible to just copy the picture segments of the lights in "on state" and use that in flash for a picture perfect animation.

it basically has all the functionality of a reel, bob so yes it's always on top. if the ball tracking works out maybe that will change. the difference is the true transparency of the.png files. the overlapping reel transparency is no longer an issue.
and soon non spanned fully rom controled animated backglasses will be possible and the old ss scores will be in their proper places.

Its an almost mythical addon!! cool.gif Features like .png support though, need to be implemented inside VP. Is this so difficult? Can someone from the developers talk about it? Also, when you say "addon", do you mean another program running at the background? There are two already...VP and Pinmame...what about cpu consumption?

Thanks BadBoyBill!!!

Judging from the description, is the caveat to this at present that it cannot be used offline, only via an internet connection?

it is another program. during testing I had it running on a pinmame table, with about 13 full 1080p images loaded and experienced no slow down what so ever. I think it balances it self out. instead of having a huge dropwall animation which sometimes bogs down vp the flashvp handels it. once the flashvp is loaded by the table script it is basically just sitting there a flipping through a swf file.

it would be nice to have png support inside vp, but I don't see it happening with the vp developement track record.

it's not online, the server is a com object that allows vp to communicate with flash, the same way that pinmame does.

Amazing stuff... curious what authors will do with this new feature. I guess originals could look a more flashy and modern.

Incredible!!!!!!
BadboyBill....it's outstanding how the Flash VP works on the TOM TigerShaw!!!!

As Unclewilly says, is like using a reel image....but, 100% transparent...and, I suppose, faster than a dropwall or a huge reel.

Great add!!!!!

Cheers.

There probably is some overlapping in cpu consumption but the big difference is VP uses video memory...Flash uses RAM memory. So using Flash VP might actually help some table authors split the load.

hmmm i donīt really know how this add on will be helpfull. I guess itīs very RAM Consuming.
When i take a look at the first Video, this is the basic Table, and it slow down alot when flash
is running. Imagin that on my TSPP Table, then nearly everything stops working....

My current VPX Tables I am working on:

Attack from Mars/Finished - The Walking Dead Pro/90% - The Lord of the Rings/75% - Family Guy/90% - The Simpsons Pinball Party/15%

the test table has been a mod of pacdudes TOM. the last one I tested had like 13 1080p images plus all the full screen images already in the table and it ran smooth on my machine.

Also every Table Author ( including me smile.gif ) will have to learn how to use the Flash Effects, and of course creating them wink.gif
