The zip only contains the stuff that is different from the already released 2.7 release. So you could just take that one from 2.7 (standalone).

btw: Anybody has found some sound issues with the current build? I got reports that Super Mario Bros and Surf'NSafari has stutter-issues still. Could you guys please give some feedback on these ones?

And some more homework for you guys: Could somebody please also test Pistol Poker with the current build and see if it releases the ball on pressing start?

(cause on my setup i cannot find any combination of VP/VPM/core scripts that makes this work, and i do not have any clue)

I've just done my homework and yes, I can launch ok.

I believe to be running latest and greatest except Rob's build 112816. This because of sound problems. But, this you'll already aware of :)

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

SMB3 will loop if the CPU can't quite keep up for any reason.    I've tested it on a pretty old core duo machine and it works OK there.

If you are having an issue with it, please report the CPU and configuration settings that you're using.

Please note that if you are using ddraw=0 with a large DMD output, this now requires signfiicantly more CPU than older versions due to the new scaling algorithm.

I don't have any stutter-issues at Surf' n Safari.

Looking into this VC2010 vs VC2015 compile/sound stutter issue, I found something kind of interesting.  The problems go away on my laptop completely if I just use a regular old sleep(1) instead of the SwitchToThread logic.   In other words:

 do

   {

     // if((u > 2000ull) && (TimerNow.QuadPart - sTimerStart.QuadPart < TimerEndSleep.QuadPart))

          Sleep(1); // really pause thread for 1-2ms (depending on OS)

     // else

     //     SwitchToThread(); // let other threads on same core run

      QueryPerformanceCounter(&TimerNow);

}

HOWEVER - the stutter will come back if VP is also using this code.    I get the smoothest performance I've ever seen from the laptop if I replace both VP and VPM's delay loop with the simpler sleep(1) call.   The laptop can't keep up with vsync=1 so the vsync=1 solution that I use on my cab doesn't work here.

There's an interesting post on Intel's developer zone about SwitchToThread calls causing interlock issues, and that shoudn't be called repeatedly more than a few times:

https://software.int...es/topic/295397

I do understand that sleep(1) calls aren't as precise, but the real question is, do we really need precision higher than 1-2ms for a throttle delay, given that we're keeping track of the total time?

what happens if you use a sleep(0) in both programs instead of the SwitchToThread()?

Sorry for newb questions here...

1) Should we be running Setup.exe, Setup64.exe, PinMame.exe or PinMame32.exe? As a newb, it's difficult to know what each of them do and which one we should be running. My cab is a new build with 64-bit OS.

2) Do we need to run "Install" from the Setup.exe screen every time we load a new vpinmame.dll? I've never done this in the past but all my tables (Star Trek LE, Tron LE, TWD LE) appear to be running fine.

3) SOLVED - TWD LE ALTERNATE SOUND ROM (CLELAND): Download the Cleland rom, unzip if necessary, rename the BIN file to "twd_156h.bin", compressed it into a zip file and name it "twd_156h.zip, copy the file to your rom directory, in VPinMame run Setup and make sure "Ignore ROM CRC errors" is checked. You should be good to go.

4) I'm trying to come up to speed on PinSound capability. I've read some posts related to it and see that I need to download some PinSound files and put them in a directory with the ROM name. Looks like I may need to educate myself on linking PinSound files to the ROM; Pinsound Studio for that? Thinking a buddy with a PinSound board can help me with that piece. Once I figure that out, how do the Sound Processing Options 1, 2 or 3 get enabled in VPinMame? Maybe I should start a separate thread with this question?

1) Setup.exe is enough to use.

2) Usually you don't need to do this, but with some updates you need to do it. Nevertheless it cannot do any harm and also will not change anything of your settings.

3) This you have to clarify on the other forum. SAM is not supported in the official build.

4) http://www.vpforums....=27063&p=334753 has some more info, also some of the following posts.

The suggestions by DJRobX with the Sleep() code are now in. Will upload a new build soon, still waiting for some other things to fall into place before.

Here some more testbuilds first: http://www.vpforums....=36659&p=366475

(for all that have performance troubles/sound stuttering with the new VPM2.8, please test these!)

I released an update build of VPM2.8 now, which features some direct performance improvements, but none of the more experimental stuff yet.

So all that had stutter problems with 2.8, please update to 2.8b.

The investigations will then continue in a soon-to-come 2.9 beta phase.

Thank you!!!  I may have mentioned this in the other sound stutter thread but if not, I'll mention it here.   For me it seems like volume adjusting using the 8/9 keys don't seem to make much of a difference.  In Scared Stiff, I can't take the volume below a dmd indicator of 8 and it always seems loud.  Plus, the different test dll's didn't seem to do anything different in my cab.  It's almost as if my system plays all rom sounds at full volume and ignores the adjustments that I make to override.  This is just more of a feeling I have.

I don't know if this will help you get more useful information but I'd be glad to set it up so that you could remote into the cab.  Also if you wish to create a "debug" version of one of the builds that outputs a slew of additional info, I'll be glad to try that too.

Again, thank you for all your help.  Happy New Year!

Thats really weird. So all ROMs are always at full volume? And changing the volume does not do anything at all?

small status update on what is happening right now with VPM:

- we mainly added tons and tons of new ROMs and mainly clones (which took seemingly forever :/)

- better votrax sc01 emulation, as the MAME team did a full rewrite (but this will take quite some more time to get everything right for the Gottliebs and Taitos that use it, but at least it already outputs some speech :))

so as soon as both things stabilize (as also some of the new sets are still being worked on by Gaston), there will be a new build for you guys to test
