but what use would that be? you film something originating from 3D and then display in 2D anyhow? In that case one can directly grab the splitted original picture out of VP?!

Received another 3D tv today (Samsung UN40ES6580) to play with and compare Active vs passive technology. My 1st tv (a Passive 3D tv LG 42LM6200 ) worked well rotated on top of my PinCab, but I was able to see separation lines very easily. I would have lived with that since it was sooo cool, but I will have to return the LG 42LM6200 because it has such lag. Tried many settings as this is not my first virtual Pincab, but always lag in 3D mode. Today I tried a 40" Samsung which is an Active 3D tv, requiring powered glasses. After setting up game mode on the TV it played VP perfectly, then I tried 3D and once again no lag, Yeah. Now the problem is I see a large black column when I look at the TV rotated 90 degree. I can tilt my head partially and it goes away, and looks great. I need to rotate each lens in the glasses I think. I really don't want to take apart a pair though, as I might want to return this TV also. Has anyone done this yet (rotate the lenses in a pair of active glasses)? Thanks toxie for making feel so excited about VP again (not that I lost too much)

OK this is an embarrassing pic of myself, but my black area problem is solved. I just hot glued 2 pairs of active shutter glasses to a spare set of sunglasses. Tables look so good with this tv now, People need to see this themselves to believe how good it looks.

my girlfriend is so proud (not). I keep laughing how funny I look, but it really is awesome.

toxie, Why would you have F10 only toggle 3D off it the 3D box is checked. I think I want my cabinet normally 2D, but having a nice F10 toggle to turn it ON would be good. I think it should always toggle ON/OFF. Doesn't this seem reasonable?

Hmmm.. both scenarios make sense, maybe I'll simply remember the last state in the registry?

Oh, and of course f10 flips between on and off, not only just turning it off..

How big is you cab screen? Just wondering that are the missing lines clearly visible or distracting with passive technology? I hate active classes and won't even consider them but the half-resolution of passive classes worries me since it will be viewed from so close. My screen is 42"

This 3d stuff really interests me because the fake 3d effect at the moment is probably the most distracting thing about virtual pinball.

Unfortunately that also means buying a new tv for my cab when the old one is just 8 months old. Oh... and as a side note. Damn the 3d television prices in Finland. I was checking LG 42LM615S for this purpose. Cheapest price in Finland is 699 euros. In Germany the you can get it with 520 euros! If I decide to get one I really need to find a store that ships to Finland as well...

I have to have it turned on 1st in order to toggle the 3D with F10. So I have to quit out of hyperpin and run VP to turn it on in the 1st place. I don' mean to nit pick, but I think others might also want to be able to turn 3D on from the off state. I think playing in 3D is really great, but Not sure I always want to run this way, I definitely want to show people who come over though.

I have noticed some lag or stutters with ball moving very fast or with lots of lights/sounds going off. Do you think its the TV or the VP that is causing this? Its buttery smooth in 2D mode my setup with fast balls and lots of lights/sounds going off.

As said: I would suggest that i do it like that:
En/Disable 3D "in general" in the video options.. Then one can still flip with F10 during gameplay (if it has been enabled before! that is a technical restriction), and i'll write the last state of that gameplay flag into the registry in -addition- to the stuff that is already saved in the video options..
So this way it will remember the 3D in video options, -and- if you want to use it during gameplay currently..

As for the lag: It costs much much more than the 2D render, so unfortunately the lag is from VP.. :(

my passive screen was 42, but that is going back because the white lines were too distracting to me after seeing Active shuttle without any of that (40 Inch). Make sure you can return whatever TV you get so you can be the judge. I'm going to be playing lots of Pinball this weekend now cause this is so cool. :)

I think if I de-case this TV it will fit inside a "normal" Williams Cab.

And commited.. So the next VP update will have that.. As primitive support also got a fix, i hope it won't be too long..

You are such an asset to this community. Thanks for all you do Toxie. I hope to have a bunch of photos of people playing my Pincab with my Dorky rotated 3D shutter glasses after the weekend :)

I got a 3d television today (LG passive 3d) and gave the 3d feature some tests. My first reaction is that the current 3d technology doesn't seem to be good enough for a full size cab use (just my 2 cents).

I have a 42 inch screen in the cab which makes the viewing distance too short. No matter how I rotated the lenses I could not make the ghosting go away completely. When I stood about 2 meters from the cab it started to look much better but from the gaming distance the picture just wasn't clear enough. I could live with the black lines caused by the passive 3d cutting the resolution in half but the ghost images are very distracting. (causing also ball to show through objects etc.)

One big problems seems to be the extremely small Y axis (or X axis when rotated to cab viewing) that is useful (most likely a tv specific problem?). If I kept my head in the middle of the screen -> objects in the middle were good and objects in left / right side had some ghosting. When I moved my head to either side the objects on the opposite side started to show duplicate (not really ghosting anymore).

I'm going to try again during the weekend and go through all the settings in detail. Hopefully I can get better results but at the moment I'm not too optimistic.

On the bright side the 3d rendering for VP worked right away! I'm only having issues with the 3d implementation on the television side.

wow This stuff still blows me away. I FINALLY got my 3D to act correctly without any lag whatsoever (Had to rename port to "DVI PC"). I can now run 3D without lag on most tables and it looks incredible. People need to see this to believe it, I mean it really is that good! I remember getting excited about this when Toxie first mentioned he was working on adding 3D, but I never imagined that he would be able to add 3D to all existing tables. I was getting a little scared that I blew $1000 on a 40" 3D tv and it wasn't going to be any better than my old 37" one because of the lag, wow I'm so relieved. Any1 near NJ need a decased 37" LCD tv for a cabinet?

My only problem now is starting up hyperspin in 2d mode and picking a game, I can't turn on 3D without exitiing out of HyperPin and changing the value for 3D. Is there a way to do this without exiting hyperpin? Thanks again

Looks great! ;)

Since you have tried both, passive and active 3D: Which system gave you the better 3D-Experience?
I know that the passive 3D cuts your resolution in half which results in black lines so the active 3D must be the better system?

active was much better in my opinion. Major problem was having to rotate the glasses though. Still working on a better solution. Any1?

I wanted to see the difference between active and passive for myself so I also got me a Samsung 46 inch active 3D (ES6300) besides my LG 47 inch passive 3D.
I'm trying to figure out which one works better but so so far I have only gotten the LG to work in 3D. Looks pretty damn cool!
I had no luck with the Samsung. all I get after trying all kinds of settings for an hour is a pretty scrambled picture.
Any hints for me how to set up VP to work with the Samsung?

Here are some photos of what I see:

(First 3 photos are made through one side of the active glasses)

It needs to be set to the right option (Top + Bottom) 3d mode for both of your tvs.
And then you'd still need to view it with glasses - unless you're saying for one or both of your tv's 3d just 'works' for normal 3d content without using glasses?

Im using the
Samsung UN40ES6580

and it works great. I hit the return button on the remote after picking the last option (window should go away)
