Star Trek the Next Generation VP91x 1.2

Version: 1.2.0
Category: VPinMAME 9.x Recreations

Author(s): jpsalas

Description:
Based on the Williams table from 1993
This is a rebuild of my older table for VP8 with new graphics and settings. This table is completely angle free and no animals were damag... err I mean no reels were used to build this table smile.gif

Just a note about the cannons: They are made using only six dropwalls without using any image, just simply VP dropwalls! The cannon animation consist of 40 frames, so the movemnt is quite smooth. The ball can be seen through them at some points, this is a limitation of the dropwalls in VP. The colors can be changed and if someone find better colors, so just write it here and I'll update the table.

The table uses the ROM LX7 SP1 (which can be downloaded from this site). I understand this being the service pack 1 of the latest LX7. There are a few lines in the script which you can change if you want to change to default rom.

Enjoy.
JP

Update 1.01
Fixed/added
- bumpers looping and the ball never going up through the lanes
- Ball going strait to the left outlane from the bumpers
- kickback not working and increased the strength.
- top lanes plastics graphics were missing
- Sometimes the ball got lost and the table made a ball search when using cannons. This is not completely fixed, but even it is better than before, still happens from time to time.
- flippers were too weak to shoot the Borg.
- Increased the strength of the kickback
- added motor sound to the cannons
- added some extra walls/ramps to keep the ball from jumping out of the ramps and going inside some walls.

I would like to thank Sheltemke for his help testing these fixes.

JP

Update 1.2
- Simply updated for VP91x with alpha ramps and some adjustments in the settings as with the rest of my tables for VP91x.
- I have also ressurected my chrome ball that I used 4 years ago smile.gif This time as a PNG transparent ball smile.gif

After 18 years making tables, it is time to take a rest and let new authors do their thing.

I guess at last I'll play some more pinball :). But I'm sure I'll make some table updates from time to time :)

Fantastic recreation there - thanks dblthumb.gif

Really like the fact that it's a "pimped out" TNG - all the painted ships, and even a Neutral Zone protector smile.gif

I have a real TNG about 6 feet away from me here that I've owned for 14 years, so I know a thing or two about them!

One minor criticism...I assume it's to do with the flipper settings, but you cannot shoot straight up the playfield from the left flipper when the ball rolls onto it from the popper - for example, on a real table, it's perfectly feasable to hit the Alpha Quadrant from that flipper straight off (for instance at the start of "Search The Galaxy", where hitting the ramps in order is significant).

However, other than that, I'd say appears to be a flawless recreation.

Thanks again clapping.gif

Regards,
Dan.

Well, I have never seen a real one, so I haven't a clue how it plays smile.gif

But, since you have one, Wizards_Hat, it will be nice if you could add anything you find different in the gameplay, and I'll try to change it, like this with the left flipper. I only added an "all round" flippers, they can shoot to the top and to the sides, but if the ball has too much speed in the inlane then the VP flippers will have trouble shooting upwards, but it can be adjusted smile.gif

Hey JP just so you know sometimes a lit kickback fails to fire the ball... I had a ball drain and it sucked sad.gif

Another masterpiece from the master artisan. An excellent recreation of a great table. It looks really good, but the best part is how it plays. Very good ball flow, and i can even hit the delta quadrant ramp sometimes! Thanks once again JP for all of the effort, it is much appreciated.

Allright! Now I suck bigger and better! nah actually I can play this one pretty well not like some of my recent scores on the other new pins! I love the cannons! they work so much cleaner now, on my computer! Don't know what you did different but this pin plays better than the vp8 one. usually with my comp the newer the pin the worse they perform. Thanks Oh Mighty One Worship.gif Worship.gif

Hi JP,
Thanks for this VP9 version of a great table! It plays very good overall, as said above, great ball flow. I love the angle indepency!
I have just a few minor gripes and those could be part of the table itself and not because of your recreation. I'm not familiar with the real machine so correct me if I'm wrong about that. Here goes:
- In the bumper region the ball has a tendency to keep going between the two top most bumpers when fed from the leftmost rollover lane and additionally, while the ball does that, it rarely pops up into one of the roll-over lanes. It feels not natural, more of a loop with sometimes up to 30+ hits before it changes course. Maybe those bumpers need an adjustment in placement or "bump" strength?
- Also, the ball escapes more from the bumper region at the left side of the delta quadrant ramp then to the lane at the right side (to the topmost flipper), and while it departs at the left side it's often going straight for the left outlane. This can't be really prevented even with timely nudging. I can live with the right outlane being a drain monster if you can't hit your shots right but I take exception to balls rolling there without me being a part in it, especially at that frequency.
- I also have the kickback not functioning sometimes.
- In some modes when the cannons have to be loaded, the machine sometimes doesn't load the ball properly and it takes a ball search to find it. It then proceeds correctly by the way so that doesn't break the game.
Thanks for looking into those things if you can find the time for it,
Slam23

I'll look into the issues and I'll see if there is something I can do. I was aware of the ball search sometimes and the kickback, and I'm not sure why they don't work all the time. But I'll take and I'll see what I find smile.gif

Kruge99 was having the same problem with his kickback on High Speed... You may want to PM him and see what he did to fix it smile.gif

I switched from using a plunger to using a kicker to fix the High Speed kickback.
