I have a High Speed Pinball machine that has a very worn playfield and cab so I am currently working on retheming it as a Monster Rancher pinball machine, mainly focusing on Monster Rancher 1 & 2. Since I'm doing the artwork for the playfield and backglass on my computer anyways I figured I might as well make a VP table for it. Let me know what you guys thinks and if anybody has tips on how to edit the actual roms in order to get them to make custom noises and displayed different words, that woud be great!

For actually re-themeing the table you could

  • re write the rom with FreeWPC. No sound adjustments
  • P-ROC board, soft re-write. Hooks up to existing switch/lamp/coils/display
  • Mp3 trigger off your switches to play sounds, keeping rom intact (scoring)

Thanks a lot chepas, I will try out some of those methods.

Wow I had no idea that the Monster Rancher Series was so unheard of. I know it came out after Pokemon and Digimon so it definitely lived in their shadows, but IMHO, I enjoyed playing the Monster Rancher games more than the others, because instead of leveling up just by battling other foes, you can train certain skills for monster such as power, speed, defense or others, therefore allowing your monster to be more customized by you.

And you get monsters by putting in different disc into your playstation, which was a lot of fun sitting around the playstation with a mess of all of the CDs I can find around the house, from movies, to albums, to games, and even CDs with some home movies burnt onto them, they all worked to give out different monsters:)

oh THAT monster rancher! I remember it now

you had game your normal discs including music ones

you put that in and it made a monster from the coding on that disc

Kewl innovation IMO

I loved the first one never bought the rest though

The first Monster Rancher was good but my favorite is the second. It's pretty similar to the first one, it just has more monsters to unlock(almost twice as many), plus better adventures, and a better fighting system. Try to play it if you get a chance.
Whatever you do, do not play Monster Rancher Evo and judge the series based off that, that was the latest console game released(ps2) and it was the worst one. It centered around a circus where the monsters did tricks and only had fighting as a side part to the game. That game was the downfall to the whole series sadly. I would love if they were to come out with a new one but make it more similar to Monster Rancher 1 and 2.

Messaged Kruge99 and he said it was okay to mod his high speed table so this monster rancher table will basically be high speed with different artwork.

Here is my machine that I have.

Sorry for the long delay, got super busy and wasn't able to. work on the table at all. I reskinned 32assasin's High Speed in order to continue this project. I have the Monster Rancher 2 soundtrack playing in the background from a youtube video. Not sure how to take out, turn down the High Speed ROM sounds and put in the Monster Rancher 2 soundtrack sounds.

I've been doing some research on how to change some of the text (ASCII) in the High Speed ROM to make it match up better with this retheme. For Example, changing the text "HIGH___     _SPEED_" to "MONSTER     RANCER" and so on. It seems like is hard, but not rocket science. I realize that I need a hex editor and use it somehow on the high speed rom. The link below has some good info on it, but it seems like the discussion ended before it was explained out to do this. Any help would be amazing.

Thanks Guys!

Okay I ended up figuring it out. You have to open the hs_l4 rom and pull out hs_u26. Put that into the hex editor. If you then scroll down to line 6336 you'll begin to see text out and just google images ASCII language in order to get the alphabet and you'll be able to change the text in the rom. I have changed one line so far and it was pretty simple. Haven't ran it in PinMAME to try it out yet.

Edit: Realized that you don't even have to type it out in ASCII, you can just click on the words and type to change them. I have ran it in PinMAME and it works great. Just working on sounds now.
