Hey Guy's,

I finally got my SSD, (Samsung 840 Pro 128gb) Thanks to everyone that replied in my post on them.

Now the decission XP or Win7.

Ive tried both and found that xp runs great. Win7 was slower at loading.

So what I (and others) would like to know, is there an advantage to using Win7 over xp Apart from the 3.5gb limit?

EG, does Win7 help give better graphics because of the drivers used with the video card?

Regards,

              Poolie

Oh, and SSD's perform better using AHCI (they sould tell you that in the manual, not let you find out after you install it as a IDE)

I'm also rebuilding my cab and thinking of updating from XP -> WIn7. The main reason being that I want the cab to be more future proof in case Zen / Pinball Arcade / Pro Pinball ever get a Windows release with cab support.

There are so many threads about Win7 vs XP yet I don't quite know what is the most recent status. Are all the problems associated with Win7 and VP/FP been fixed with the latest drivers etc. (using GTX470 myself) or is XP still the preferred cab OS?

As far as I know FXAA is still not working with Win7 (so actually in that case you get better graphics with XP) but I haven't used that in XP either so that doesn't matter for me.

Well I had a lot of problems at first with win7. U have to unblock files and change folder attributes, but with any new os you have to learn it. I have mine working fine now. I am going to uninstall win7 and use xp 64 professional because my shell program will not work the way I want with win7, I can tell you more on performance once I change. I had a lot of head aches with win7 for sure! I use a 9500 gt NVidia 4 gig ram and a intel 2.4 duo. I have no speed issues with win7 at all, but I also optimize my os for best performance!

The biggest reason I am putting XP on my system is when I copy a file I want to use that file and not wait or get blocked from my files by windows 7. Or have to change a permission to allow myself to use my own files it is stupid! I can understand wanting to protect critical files from novice users but not everyone is a novice user. If I want to unable read only status of all my files I should be able too! You pay for win7 but microsoft wont give you full control of it! I am sure there is a way but win7 is a big pain in the arse! that is with windows 7 ulticrap 64

Win 7 64bit I don't even see why you would want a non supported OS, like XP, it is old, it came out in 2001 and no modern driver support, no Microsoft support,  limited on monitor setup.  Trying to find old drivers will be an issue, after all it is 2013

XP last supported service pack was 2008,  maybe If you have a very old PC maybe that is why you would choose an old OS.

Those complaining about prompts and privs in Windows 7 do not have it setup correctly, if you truly know what you are doing ... turn off the UAC and you will have no issues on folder privs or running .exe files or prompt questions.

Why not both ? Make a Dual boot system, works great ! As for XP & SSD, NO Trim support, so performance is gonna suffer in the long term.

Currently VP and FP works better on XP (for me that is), but as teppotee states IF pinball arcade & co are going to be released it's gonna be

on Win 7/8, so much more future proof !

... gone fishin', no really.......

Like others have said unless you running an old pc no reason to use xp. I put windows 7 64bit in my cab and turned off uac haven't had any problems running anything.. And with a quadcore with a SSD drive in windows 7 hyperpin will boot up in like 10 secs tables load in secs its just a better experience

I have a pretty beefy PC with i5 and GTX470 so I guess Win7 is the way to go. I think I will order another SSD drive for new WIn7 installation and keep the current XP installation in it's 60GB drive. Just in case.

Thanks for all the comments so far!

No personal experience with either. I have a Virtuapin cab on order and XP was the recommended OS

Pinball FX is coming to Windows 7, at least, according to some posts on their forums.  Latest info I've seen was in this thread:

"We'll be releasing a general PC version that is not limited to the Windows 8 Metro environment. It should work on Windows 8, 7, and possibly other versions as well. Your table library won't carry over between this and the Windows 8 versions, so you should pick one and stick with it. The new version will be pretty similar to the Windows 8 version in terms of look, feel, and available content, but it will have global leaderboards and some other features like more extensive graphical options. It will also have offline play. We will add some features such as basic cab support after launch. We're still targeting Steam as the distribution channel, and the game should be out relatively soon."

I'm awaiting my VirtuaPin to be delivered, but I've had no problems with running everything on Win 7 64 bit on my test setup on my current desktop.  All I did was follow the directions in the "Visual Pinball for Dummies" PDF found in the tutorials section of this site.  You basically just run all the programs as admin and set them to XP compatibility mode.
