Hi, My name is felix, i'm an italian pinball passionate, but due to a lack of pinball machines in my town i'm forced to play almost exclusively visual pinmame. In the few pinball machines i have seen in my town, local pinball wizards succeeded in breaking the grand champion score, but I can't do it. Anyway their scores are nothing compared to top scores reported in pinballhighscores.org., so I made some research about default grand champion scores on many pinball machines looking for a comparison value.
My question is How are these scores set? Are they a good reference value for a normal player? or they are too low or too high?

Bye and thank you

Here follows a list of what i found.

Welcome to the forums!

The grand champions scores are usually preset in the ROM content at the factory. These are usually set, if I reacall correctly, to challenge the average player. These scores are usually reset, either by the operator after a cartaiin number of games played (especially if they feel the score is too high which would discourage the average player from playing the game) or by the software after a certain number of plays.

In addition, there is an option within the ROM to sdjust those scores to make them higher or lower than the default scores. The operator would go into the ROM options menu system to adjust those scores. Depending upon the machine Master Processing Unit (MPU) the adjustment is made by scrolling through the options to get to the item they want to adjust and using the buttons inside the coin door they would make that adjustment.

For VPM tables, you can make those same adjustments yourself. There are tutorials hosted here which show how to adjust replay levels on tables, and the same procedure would apply for the grand champions score. You would probably need the manual for the table to find which option you need to scroll to and adjust.

There are links in my signature for posts with links to those tutorials. Check out the posts for replay level adjustment for DMD tables and replay level adjustment for non-DMD tables (Alpha-Numeric tables) and click on one of those links to bring up the procedure to make those adjustments.

Hope this answers your question.
